Tips On Avoiding Home Safety Risks

Doing this will help prevent safety hazards and expensive repairs in the future. Dan Stewart, president of the pillar to the largest North American home inspection service, offers these suggestions:

Inspect the cover: wooden decks can be damaged and rusting of the harshness of winter. See if the nails or screws are appearing. Clean the cover and seal.

Check electrical outlets and extension cords: Replace any loose or frayed plug extension cords to avoid a fire hazard.

“Degrease” the garage: If the family car has been leaking oil or other liquid on the floor of the garage all winter, now is a good time to clean. A fat garage floor is slippery and potentially a fire hazard. Use nontoxic, nonflammable degreaser, biodegradable, such as Simple Green. Pour the concentrate into the liberality and scrub with a nylon brush. Cover the area with about an inch of cat litter and let stand for 24 hours. Sweep litter clean floor for a low cost.

Improving the backyard with size in mind: Look to see how plants and trees have grown over the past year. May be too large and could damage the house structure. Leave enough space between the house and baby shrubs you are planting to 12 “between the floor and the wall. This provides adequate ventilation and reduces the risk of future damage.

Clean the A / A: Use your garden hose to rinse the fins of the evaporator coil in the unit A / C condenser.

Check the garage door, garage door can weigh up to 400 pounds. Springs and balancing mechanisms can fail over time, which can cause great damage to the door and damage to people around him. Now is a good time to take a close look at the docks.

To avoid safety hazards and expensive repairs on the road, always a good idea to get a full inspection of a reputable company and was established as a pillar to post.

Inspect the smoke, radon and carbon monoxide: You must try and change the battery every three months or as needed. Make sure there is one detector on each floor of the house.

Winter Home Safety

Did you know one in three house fires occur in winter months?

Here are some tips for staying warm – and safe – this winter.

Check first
Check and clean heaters and fireplaces before that haven’t been used since last winter. Oil, gas or wood heating units might require a yearly maintenance check.

Heaters
Place portable heaters on a strong, sturdy, non-combustible surface.

Don’t put them near curtains, tablecloths, bedding or flammable materials like paper or wallpaper.

Don’t place clothes on your heater to dry – keep wet clothing at least one metre away.

Turn off your heater before going to bed.

Fireplaces
Use a fireplace screen to stop sparks from flying into the room and make sure the fire is out before you go to bed.

Kids’ sleepwear
Dress children in pyjamas with low fire danger.

Set a rule about the distance your children must stay away from heaters, especially if they’re dressed in flowing nightwear and dressing gowns.

Electric blankets
Check electric blankets by holding them up to a light – you’ll be able to see if any wires are touching.

Test your electric blanket by laying it flat on top of your bed and turning it on for five minutes to check it is working.

Store them carefully to protect the wires and replace any electric blanket more than 10 years old.

These tips will help keep your home safer and warmer during winter, accidents can always happen but by following these few tips you can greatly reduces the chances of them occurring.

We also recommend ensuring you have the right home and content insurance for you and your family.

Staying warm is one thing but staying safe is what you should really worry about, always keep an eye out for any dangerous situations and if you can smell a strange scent be sure to go check straight away.

Manager refuses to allow me to stay after dark due to “safety”?

Question by Bunkie: Manager refuses to allow me to stay after dark due to “safety”?
I am Deaf, and work in a corporate office environment. During the summer, it was agreed that I can stay late (until 6-pm-ish) to make up hours, and I was given an alarm code. Since it gets dark earlier, my manager has been staying in and and often asks me when I plan on taking off for home (which is always at 6 pm) and often showing frustration when I mention so. I requested that I continue the ability to stay late. She refused because she is concerned about my safety in the dark, and has slightly hinted it is due to my deafness.

I have experience working into the wee-dark hours of midnight/early mornings at another position, and am able to handle myself (I have self-defense experience) — I’m often the one who take care of others and myself very well. I about tell this to the manager but she often cuts in and says “I’m worried”. Last night she didn’t handled herself well after getting frozen when the cleaning guy caught her by surprise (I wasn’t).

My car is always parked right outside the door, and the area has some lights so it is not completely dark.

Basically, I am asking if this constributes to be a form of discrimination (due to my disability). And what would be the best way to handle this? Thank you.
To the person who suggested over-protection: I am required to work to make up the hours, per manager (in order to keep my full-time benefits).

Home Safety For Baby

Once your bring your newborn home from the hospital for the first time you may feel frightened. All the responsibilities you face with your new baby can be overwhelming. Before you bring your baby home you will want to make sure you have gotten and installed correctly their new car seat. Installing their car seat improperly is dangerous to your child’s safety. So installing it properly the first time insures your peace of mind when transporting your newborn.

Check your baby’s crib for proper installation to prevent any possible harmful dangers. Make sure the crib mattress fits securely without any gapes for them to get wedged in. Do not leave the rail down on their crib when you are out of the room. Never leave your newborn alone and sleeping in their crib with toys, pillows, or blankets that could fall over their face and smother them. Make sure the sheet bedding fits snugly and securely.

Your newborn should sleep on their back on a firm mattress. Make sure your baby is not left alone with any objects or toys in their crib. Monitors are a good tool for listening for baby when you are not in the same room. It enables you to hear any changes in their sleeping and breathing patterns as well as coughing or choking.

There are many possible dangers in your home that could be a threat to your babies safety. Your newborn will grow and change quickly and will be more susceptible to the new dangers in your home. Don’t ever leave your baby alone for even a second when changing them. Their quick movement could cause them to fall and injure themselves. They will start to reach for everything so do not leave any heavy objects or cords of any kind in their reach. In no time at all your baby will be scooting and crawling on the floor.

Electric outlet covers should be used on electrical outlets to insure there is no danger of electrocution. Your smoke detector should be checked monthly to make sure it is working.

There are some other things you can do to protect your baby from dangers in your home. Locks for your all your cabinets is a must to prevent your little one from getting into harmful or poisonous supplies. These locks can be obtained from your local hardware or department store. Once your baby starts to pull up and climb, window locks are another good tool for keeping babies safe and secure from intruders as well as from open windows that they could fall through. Always have your infant strapped in their highchair at all times to prevent accidental falls from climbing out or slipping in their seat. Safety gates work well to keep your baby safe from stairways, porches and decks. They are helpful to confine your baby into small areas for their playtime and for watching them closely. Your babies safety needs will change in their environment as they grow.

Your child’s safety will always be your number one priority. Children are a precious gift to be loved and protected. The most rewarding thing in your life is parenthood.

As Santa Ana Winds Bring Wildfire Risk to Southern California, IBHS Offers Important Tips to Reduce Wildfire Losses

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) December 05, 2011

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) reminds property owners in Southern California that wildfires are one of the biggest threats posed by Santa Ana winds.

According to the National Weather Service, Southern California will receive another powerful blast of Santa Ana winds today with gusts reaching over 60 mph.

?Santa Ana winds are generally warm and dry, creating tinderbox conditions, but even when temperatures are cooler, they can be a problem? said Dr. Steve Quarles, senior scientist at IBHS. ?From a wildfire risk perspective, when these winds are blowing, there is rapid fire spread and the fire is very difficult to control.?

Santa Ana winds were blamed for fueling the fast-moving Witch Creek Mega-Fire in San Diego County in October 2007, which ultimately caused $ 1 billion in property damage. The Witch Creek Fire and other significant wildfires in Southern California have destroyed thousands of residential and commercial properties in the past several years.

There are three threats or exposures that a building can experience during a wildfire: windborne embers (also known as firebrands); radiant heat; and, direct flame contact. When considering the vulnerability of a home or business to wildfire, property owners should evaluate and address all of these potential exposures, and work to reduce vulnerability to each.

?Ember exposure is considered the most important risk, because most building ignitions have been attributed to them,? said Dr. Quarles. ?Embers can ignite building components and contents directly, or ignite vegetation and other combustible items adjacent to or near a building. This then can result in a radiant heat and/or direct flame contact exposure.

?Homes built on, or at the top of, a slope can be more vulnerable to wildfire because of increased fire threat resulting from fire burning up a slope and the elevated wind speeds during Santa Ana conditions. In this case, avoiding direct flame contact exposure may require increased defensible space around the home,? Quarles explained.

Fortunately, it is possible to significantly reduce the likelihood of damage from a wildfire. IBHS provides residents and business owners with a Wildfire Retrofit Guide ? Southern California Edition, which addresses the unique building styles and characteristics found in that area. The guide also includes information about how to create a wildfire-resistant landscape. Property owners can use the Wildfire Risk Assessment Checklist at the end of the guide to determine the retrofit projects they want to undertake, and use the cost estimator in the checklist to help prioritize the projects they can do now and those that should be part of future maintenance and renovations.

In March, IBHS conducted the first-ever full-scale wildfire ember storm demonstration at the IBHS Research Center in South Carolina. This demonstration was part of a building science initiative designed to illustrate how easily some commonly used materials and items near or on houses can ignite from embers, and what homeowners can do to better protect their homes.

For example, property owners can prepare for wildfires by cleaning up dead vegetation around the property, in gutters and on the roof. Find out other ways to reduce wildfire risk with guidance from IBHS at http://www.disastersafety.org/wildfire.

Autism Speaks Launches Updates to Its Online Autism Safety Project

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 12, 2011

Autism Speaks, the world?s largest autism science and advocacy organization, today introduced 11 new sections to its popular Autism Safety Project on the Autism Speaks website. Safety is a concern for all parents, but given the challenges of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), safety is even more critical. The new sections of the Autism Safety Project focus on safety in the home and the community, and provide information about preventing sexual abuse and other forms of mistreatment.

Keeping individuals with autism safe is of paramount concern to families and should start within the home. These concerns are addressed in ?Safe Signals,? a collection of in-home safety materials for individuals with ASD developed by the Ohio State University Health System Nursing Patient Education in conjunction with the Ohio State University?s Nisonger Center and the Ohio State University Medical Center?s Burn Center. The Safe Signals section of the Autism Safety Project includes a workbook and vinyl clings with important home safety information for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living areas and utility spaces. In addition, a ?Safe Signals? video is available on the Autism Speaks Autism Safety Project webpage. A $ 25,000 community grant from Autism Speaks covered the production costs of the ?Safe Signals? video, workbook and vinyl clings.

?The focus of the Safe Signals project is to develop fire and burn safety at home for older teens and young adults with autism. To our knowledge no other resource quite like this exists for this population,? said Lisa Murray-Johnson, program director for patient education at the Ohio State University Medical Center. ?Whether they live alone, with a roommate, in a group home or with care providers, we want to prevent accidental injury before it happens. Burn center experts are excellent at treating burns, but education to prevent burns is equally important,? said Murray-Johnson.

A new Community Section expands the Autism Safety Project with the inclusion of information, tips and links to professional resources to help ensure the safety of an individual with autism outside of the home. It is broken down into categories that address common situations that can pose a risk depending on an individual with ASD?s cognitive and communication abilities. Categories include crossing the street, learning landmarks and directions, taking public transportation, using public restrooms and asking for help. For each category, Autism Speaks worked with professionals to provide tips and resources to teach appropriate safey skills in the community.

Sexual abuse is a very real concern for individuals affected by autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls suffer from sexual abuse before the age of 18. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey, the country’s largest and most reliable crime study, reports that every two minutes a person is sexually victimized in the United States ? and the numbers for individuals with disabilities are even higher. With these troubling statistics in mind, Autism Speaks has developed a special section of the Autism Safety Project on sexual abuse to inform and empower parents to talk about sexuality with their children, take preventive measures, detect signs of abuse and address suspected instances of abuse.

?People with autism are especially vulnerable to sexual predators, and some may either be unaware that they are being mistreated or may be unable to effectively communicate that abuse has occurred,? said Lisa Goring, Autism Speaks vice president of Family Services. ?It?s critical that we do everything possible to prevent abuse by arming parents and children with key safety information, as well as improve our ability to detect and report any instance of mistreatment.?

Additional sections of the Autism Safety Project include information and strategies targeted to first responders and judicial personal. Within each section there is information about characteristics associated with autism and strategies to facilitate safe and productive interactions. The online resource also features materials to help families be better prepared for an emergency or crisis situation, including tools for creating an effective safety plan. It also provides a list of national autism information resources that includes first responder training programs and safety programs for people with disabilities.

About Autism

Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders ? autism spectrum disorders ? caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by social and behavioral challenges, as well as repetitive behaviors. An estimated 1 in 110 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum ? a 600 percent increase in the past two decades that is only partly explained by improved diagnosis.
